Meta’s photo-sharing application Instagram unveiled the AI-driven feature to edit backgrounds. The feature, identified as Backdrop, involves a green screen-like feature allowing the users to swap the messy kitchen background with lush tropical forests.

Instagram confirmed that the background-swapping feature is presently available to US-based users. The generative AI tool is drawing from the in-house Emu Edit tech.

Meta revealed that the Backdrop feature extends the scope beyond the usual color filtering and typical tweaks. Backdrop allows the users to reimagine their image’s background using a few taps and prompts to generate an entirely different image for the story.

Instagram Integrates Backdrop Feature to Guarantee AI-Powered Simplicity

In a Threads post, the generative AI head at Meta, Ahmad Al-Dahle, disclosed how Backdrop is starting the new narrative. The AI lead urged users to tap the button.

Users can utilize the Try It sticker appearing once you post the image for sharing and inviting friends to use it for the initial time.

Al-Dahle indicated that the tool is set to guarantee simplicity by leveraging advanced technology. The Backdrop presents various suggested prompts, allowing users to craft unique prompts.

Meta appears to leverage AI to boost the confidence and creativity of users posting the photos. Besides, the sharing inspires others to try out the feature, increasing usage and engagement.

Instagram’s move to integrate generative AI aligns with social platforms’ trend to infuse AI into applications at a brisk clip. Snapchat revealed similar AI-powered functions on Tuesday, December 12 update.

Meta Optimistic of AI-Enhance Future, Shifting From Metaverse

Adding Backdrop to Instagram presents another chip that underscores Meta’s massive bet on artificial intelligence as a business strategy. Integrating AI-driven features within Meta’s applications portrays Mark Zuckerberg’s shifting focus from the metaverse.

The shift towards AI is evident in Meta’s involvement in the open-source community. Also, unveiling generative AI features across its portfolio of messaging platforms – Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger- is enough of a statement.

Meta’s push into the AI space is evident with the introduction of Imagine with Meta. The product involves an AI-powered image generator that leverages EMU by operating as an autonomous website.

Mark Zuckerberg hailed Threads for expanding into more European countries as it illustrates a significant achievement in the Meta’s global strategy. Threads aims to rival X, formerly Twitter, now privately owned by Elon Musk.

Expanding the geographical footprint of Threads, alongside the widespread integration of AI-driven features in the Zuckerberg-led empire, illustrates Meta’s vision for a globally connected and AI-enhanced future.

Adding generative AI appears realistic and exciting, unlike the rushed pursuit into a metaverse dominated by half-legged cartoon avatars.
