The release of the prototype of an artificial intelligence-enhanced search engine caused a drop in Microsoft and Google’s stock.
OpenAI has revealed plans to enter the search engine market with the statement concerning SearchGPT. This artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced search engine seeks to make searching more natural for users. Despite being considered a ‘temporary prototype,’ the July 25 reveal is a vivid shot across the bow of the exceptionally leading Google and Microsoft Bing, giving search findings for OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
In an official blog post, OpenAI revealed they are testing SearchGPT. Such involves a prototype comprising new search features designed to merge the robustness of their artificial intelligence models with data from the web. The integration will offer quick and timely answers with vivid and pertinent sources.
SearchGPT is Available to Test Users
The firm claimed SearchGPT was available to 10,000 test users as a prototype at the unveiling. The GPT-4 family of models powers the service. There have been rumors concerning OpenAI’s venture into the live web, mainly due to the limitations of the typical large language models (LLMs). The LLMs depend on a massive but static amount of information gathered up to a point in time, restricting their knowledge of present occurrences.
According to several teaser videos shared by OpenAI, the new artificial intelligence tool was developed to sum up web information. It also answers user queries in a way similar to how ChatGPT runs. In some instances, it resembles what Perplexity presently offers. However, if incorporated into ChatGPT, SearchGPT would expand the capability of OpenAI’s chatbot. This incorporation would develop a multimodal artificial intelligence tool capable of handling different media types and offering comprehensive search outcomes.
SearchGPT substitutes Microsoft Bing with its technology. The shared videos do not reveal the typical banner showing that search results are Bing-enhanced, as with the present ChatGPT version. While Google has been incorporating artificial intelligence into its services, SearchGPT’s progressive capabilities are in considerable danger.
In reality, Alphabet (the firm behind Google) and Microsoft (which powers Bing) experienced a fall in stock prices instantly after the news came out. The stocks witnessed a tangible fall since they closed down nearly 3% for the day. SearchGPT is the most recent development in the new age of web search.
Advent of Google Zero
Nilay Patel, an editor-in-chief of a tech news website, has coined the term’ Google Zero.’ The strategy prioritizes practicality instead of variety. This means that AI-enhanced engines choose a more direct strategy rather than presenting a list of various approaches and sources to a particular query, which motivates users to conduct research. Thus, they offer succinct, summarized data with an exact response to what a user is searching for.
The unveiling of Google’s artificial intelligence summaries has evoked concerns among web publishers. This is because users might not visit their sites in case data is extracted and offered upfront. The situation is worsened by the tendency of artificial intelligence to hallucinate and even offer dangerous answers based on faulty sources.
OpenAI noted that addressing these concerns would involve publishers adopting different approaches to its AI chatbot and search engine. The firm claimed that SearchGPT is about search and is separate from training its generative artificial intelligence foundation models. Sites can come up with search results even when they withdraw from generative AI training.
In the meantime, OpenAI has collaborated with different publishers to improve SearchGPT’s accuracy and data. The collaborations permit OpenAI to offer current data, vivid attribution, and links to sources.
In its statement, the organization said SearchGPT was created to aid users connect with publishers by prominently quoting and linking to them in searches. Replies have vivid, in-line links and named attribution to let users know where data comes from.
Similar to other OpenAI technologies, this is simply a teaser to allow users to know what the artificial intelligence giant is working on. According to Sam Altman, even in its early form, SearchGPT is better than legacy search engines. He also promised a more improved experience in the future.
